Welcome to my step-by-step guide to writing songs. These are just tips, you do not have to follow everything I say.

-TOPIC-

--Something you have dealt with, can be anything from walking down the street to losing someone close to you

--Something you know about, this could mean something your friend is going through that you need to express yourself about

--Something that you are not involved in but affects you, for US residents, this could mean 9/11 you may not have been in the Twin Towers but you could have known someone in there or you could just wanna write a song thanking the people who sacrificed there life

-Writing Sequence-

A song is a poem, this means it is divided into stanzas (1) Of course they have different names, but they are ALL stanzas

A song has 2 parts that are needed, and one part that is optional

The first needed part is the verse (2)

The second needed part is the chorus (3)

The part that is optional is called the hook (4)

Your lyrics do not have to rhyme, they can but they do not have to

Use 1-4 syllable words, they're easier to sing/rap

The order of a song is Verse-Hook(if you choose to use one)-Chorus

1-Stanza, a poem is divided into parts, called a stanza

2-Verse, i.e- Theres a place off Ocean Avenue where I used to sit and talk with you we were both 16 and it felt so right Sleepin all day stayin up all night Stayin up all night... Ocean Avenue-Yellowcard

3-Chorus, i.e- ...These are my confessions Just when I thought I said all I could say My chick on the side says she got one on the way These are my confessions Man I'm thrown and I don't know what to do I guess I gotta give you part two of my confessions If I'm gonna tell it then I gotta tell it all Damn near cried when I got that phone call I'm so throwed I don't know what to do but to give you part two of my confessions... Confessions Pt. 2-Usher

4-Hook, i.e- ...Fall, with you I fall so fast I can hardly catch my breath I hope it lasts... Pieces of Me-Ashlee Simpson

--TUNE--

Once you figure out the genre, you can move on to the tune

If your song is slow, you might want a quiet type of tune

If it is a rock song, you might want something very loud and agressive

--TITLE--

The title should come last in the process

The title does not have to be in the song;for example, in New Found Gory's song, 'At Least I'm Known For Something', they do not say that anywhere in the song

The title does not have to be in the chorus;for instance, in Dashboard Confessional's song, 'Hands Down', they say hands down in the last hook

--GENRE--

First of all, who do you want to sing your song? You? Boy? Girl? Friend? Family?

Do you want your song to be a slow song, a song you can dance to, or a song you would hear at the Warped Tour?

--FINISHED PRODUCT--

Make sure you sign your song, that way if you decide to show it to anyone and they ask for a copy, they cannot steal it
